To Have, Give All to All

This post is part of a series entitled: Reflections from A Course in Miracles. We are currently reviewing Chapter 6: The Lessons of Love, Section V. The Lessons of the Holy Spirit. This is lesson A. To Have, Give All to All.

“When your body and your ego and your dreams are gone, you will know that you will last forever.”

Many describe the death of the ego as the beginning of life. You are much more than you perceive yourself to be. You are not your body and you are not your mind and you are certainly not your ego, you are more than the sum of all of these parts.

We have already learned that which God creates is eternal, and therefore, we learn that the body is not wholly who or what we are. The body can be destroyed and is therefore not a creation of God.

We have also already learned that spirit uses what we ourselves create in order to teach us.

“The Holy Spirit, as always, takes what you have made and translates it into a learning device.”

It is in this way that we can learn from the body and mind.

“If the mind can heal the body, but the body cannot heal the mind, then the mind must be stronger than the body. Every miracle demonstrates this.”

This demonstrates to us again, that all miracles must begin with changing the mind.

“He always tells you that only the mind is real, because only the mind can be shared. The Body is separate, and therefore cannot be part of you. To be of one mind is meaningful, but to be one body is meaningless. By the laws of the mind, then, the body is meaningless.”

The body, as we have learned many times throughout this series, is nothing more than a playground to experience life in human form and a means of spirit communicating its lessons to us while we are in this form.

We have already learned, spirit communicates to us through the body. He uses our own creation to lead us through its communication, back to the wholeness that is the Kingdom of God.

“The Holy Spirit sees the body only as a means of communication, and because communicating is sharing it becomes communion.”

Fear always leads to attack. We attack things we fear, because we do not understand them. Fear, as a means of communication serves only to break down that very same communication. Fear and love cannot coexist in the same space.

“Those who communicate fear are promoting attack and attack always breaks communication making it impossible.”

Through the lessons of the crucifixion, we have learned that attack is never justified.

Have you ever enjoyed the act of giving just for the sake of it? The light in the receivers eyes, the smile on their face, the gratitude… remember that feeling as we discuss this concept:

“To have, give all to all.”

If you are able to identify the joy in your heart, having given something to another,  this concept is more easily grasped. This idea is central to the Kingdom of heaven, it is the concept behind the idea that it is better to give than to receive. It is an addictive feeling, watching the darkness to turn to light, watching sadness or pensiveness turn to gratitude and wonder.  It is one most of us know, yet few of us grasp onto as we deal with our egos.

To the ego, this idea of giving in order to receive is a foreign one, one that it feels is insane. That is because, when we hold this concept as foundational, the perceptions of the ego can no longer exist.

The only way to disprove the ideas of the ego, are to try the ideas of spirit and see for yourself. It is impossible to hold two opposing views, so one must be diminished by the other. Only creations of the ego can be destroyed, creations of the spirit cannot. Therefore, it is truly grasping at insanity when we allow ego ideals to rule, because we cannot destroy  the ideals of heaven. Since they cannot coexist, once will indeed be destroyed. Only the ideas of spirit can remain in the end.

It is because we attempt to hold to ideas at once that we feel conflicted. Peace comes from spirit and spirit always answer when we call. We are each seeking peace from this internal conflict.

“There can be no conflict between sanity and insanity. Only one is true, and therefore only one is real. The ego tries to persuade you that it is up to you to decide which voice is true, but the Holy Spirit teaches you that truth was created by God, and your decision cannot change it.”

You can try to ignore the Voice of Spirit, but it will not go away. Only the ego views this as insanity. When we choose to ignore the ego, it simply goes away. When we choose to ignore spirit, its voice remains steady, this is the cause of the internal conflict from which we week relief.

This is a preliminary step. It is necessary to start with this step in order to move forward. Some people stay in this step for a long time, because if they continue trying to grasp both ideas, they remain in conflict. It is not necessary to live with this conflict however, because the moment we refuse to listen to the ego, becomes the first moment of relief. This is the first step only, and while it is a necessary first step, it is not necessary to complete this step in order to move forward to the next, it is only necessary that we recognize it as the first step.

This is where many of us find ourselves in spiritual recovery, we begin understanding that we have to rulers in the mind, the ego and the spirit. It is up to us to choose which lessons we use.

Once we can recognize these truths, ego loses its grasp on the mind and now are prepared to receive lesson two of the Holy Spirit;

“To have Peace, teach Peace to learn it.”
