Projection is a psychological theory in which humans defend themselves against their own unconscious impulses or qualities (both positive and negative) by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others.
In the last lesson, we learned that the story of the crucifixion is an extreme exaggeration to teach us a lesson. The crucifixion is the ultimate example of projection.
When we came to earth to experience existence in human form, we chose to have an ego, it was a package deal. The ego is the part of our mind that perceives us as separate individuals with needs and desires of our own, apart from the universal mind, which, in ACIM, we refer to as the Holy Spirit.
Each of us, who remain unenlightened, has a split mind, in ACIM terms. We have both the Universal mind and we have the ego. When we choose to perceive our world through the lenses of the ego, we are rejecting parts of ourselves and often projecting those parts onto others.
If you will humor me, imagine your body as a satellite, projecting a signal out into the world. Your thoughts, feelings and intentions are constantly broadcasting a signal, whatever they are. Whether we project positive loving thoughts and feelings or we project negative, angry ones, our signal attracts whatever frequency of energy we are projecting.
Our shadow side is the part of ourselves we reject. When we reject parts of ourselves, those parts that do not fit with our narrative, we tend to project them on others. Imagine, if you think about nothing but negativity about ourselves, this is what we project outward and the universe will respond in kind by returning us more of the frequency we have transmitted. We will meet people with that negative attribute. Projection is the ability to find that negative attribute in another individual and in doing so, we perceive them as separate, incomplete or flawed. This judgment is only part of the ego, because the spirit does not judge. It already knows that we are eternal, perfect and whole and never seeks to exclude.
If I were raised by a monkeys who treated me as an equal member of the tribe, I would believe myself to be a monkey, part of the community in which I was raised. Not until someone told me I was different from the rest of the monkeys would I perceive myself as different. This is projection. It is a function of the ego and serves to keep our mind separate. Spirit does not see these negative perceptions we assign to ourselves and others, spirit only sees whole, eternal, perfection.
The Holy Spirit begins by perceiving you as perfect. Knowing this perfection is shared He recognizes it in others, this strengthening it in both. Instead of anger this arouses love for both, because it establishes inclusion”
This is the fastest way to discern which of the two minds we are using to perceive a situation is this; if the idea seeks to exclude, it is of the ego, if it seeks to include, it comes from spirit.
We know that forgiveness and unconditional love are not only miracles but seek to atone.
Anytime our thoughts seek to exclude, we are perceiving through the lens of the ego. Miracles come from perfect love, perfect forgiveness and the recognition of the perfect wholeness of ourselves and each other. This requires that we not judge others, that we not feel guilt for our previous mistakes but that we show up each and everyday seeking perfect love and wholeness anew.
Each of us holds within us the divine spark of perfection and love. It is who we are. Any perception we hold otherwise, is a function of the ego and is not based in reality. Rather, the ego bases its perceptions on exclusionary criteria, believing one better than another. Perceptions that exclude are of the ego and not based in reality. Spirit can however use these perceptions to redirect us. This is the purpose of projection, those parts of ourselves we reject become reflected in mirror like faction. When we can learn to see past these perceptions to the divine spark in another, we can than begin to see that same divine spark within. Spirit seeks and sees only truth. When we learn to combat this exclusionary darkness in ourselves, this reflection will then be mirrored in those around us. When we see only beauty, we are presented with more beauty. Thus, when we perceive only pain, we shall be presented with more of the same. Like the satellite I described earlier, our frequency projects itself to capture more of the same. When we are able to see the divine spark in each other and project it more widely (Share our ideas) we will reunite as one. We will no longer remain as part of the separation, this is the atonement, it is returning ourselves to the whole.
