The Decision for God

This post is part of a series entitled: Reflections from A Course in Miracles. We are currently reflecting on Chapter 5 Healing and Wholeness, VII The Decision for God.

“Do you really believe you can make a voice that can drown out God’s? Do you really believe you can devise a thought system that can separate you from Him? Do you really believe you can plan for your safety and joy better than He Can? You need to be neither careful nor careless; you need merely cast your cares upon Him, because He careth for you.”

The first time I heard “Let Go and Let God,” I Struggled with the idea. I was agnostic, how could I turn my cares over to a God I did not believe in and moreover, why would I turn my cares over to a God who would seek to punish me for my mistakes? I first heard this phrase in al-anon, a self-help, 12-step program for loved ones of alcoholics. In my 12 step program, I learned to turn my cares over to my higher power, as I defined it and my definition of higher power was non-existent.

I have grown much over the 25 years, since I was first introduced to the concept. I am happy to report that I have transcended my conflict with the phrase. Life always deals us a hand, whether we are prepared for said hand or not. Sometimes, we have all the cards we need and with a flush, we gather our riches and bask in abundance. More often than not, however, Life deals us circumstances we are often not prepared for. This phrase seeks to teach us that everything will be okay. The Kingdom of God is perfect and eternal and there is nothing to fear. In letting go of trying to control every circumstance, we find peace. In order to do so, we have to have faith that the “Big Guy” has our back.

In this last section of Chapter 5, we learn that we have to have this faith and trust in God, in order to prosper. Ruminating will never, ever set us free.

We have already learned the definition of the miracle. Here we learn why the miracle is not always readily available to those who have healed. Many healers we learn, have not healed themselves completely. They may be able to perform miracles, but not always. They may be able to heal the sick, but not raise the dead. This is because their healing is incomplete. (God helps those who help themselves after all.) Sanity is wholeness and miracles are given to those who are already complete.

The Voice of God is found inside you, it is in your intuition, it is your innate knowledge, it is the universal consciousness. You do not need to listen to any external voice because the Voice you are looking for is already with you, you need look no father than within.

The plan for salvation is sealed, you need only choose it.

“God himself gave you the perfect Correction for everything you made that is not in accord with His holy Will. I am making His plan perfectly explicit to you, and will also tell you of your part in it, an how urgent it is to fulfill it.”

You need to do nothing more than choose.

“Whenever you are not wholly joyous, it is because you have reacted with a lack of love to one of God’s creations (including yourself).”

Repentance, as we know it, is irrelevant, because if you repent, it implies guilt. Guilt, as we have learned is a function of the ego and has no place in the Holy Kingdom of God.

If you are not wholly joyous, it is because you have chosen to abide by the mind of the ego vs the mind of spirit. Feeling anything other than joy is an indication that the ego is in charge. The first step is recognizing this was a choice, the second step, is choosing differently.

“Your part is merely to return your thinking to the point at which the error was made, and give it over to the Atonement in peace.”

Anything the ego perceives as a need for guilt can be turned over to God. There is no need to live in guilt. The past is over, it no longer exists. If we remain guilty, we remain in the past. Turning this guilt over to God and allowing spirit to transform this guilt into thought that is more useful allows us to engage in the joyous freedom of spirit.

If you want to commune with Holy Spirit, you need only choose to do so. Remember, the Holy Spirit will enter, but only after it has been invited.

“I must have decided wrongly, because I am not at peace.

I Made the decision myself, but I can also decide otherwise.

I want to decide otherwise, because I want to be at Peace.

I do not feel guilty, because the Holy Spirit will undo all the consequences of my wrong decision if I will let Him.

I choose to let Him, by allowing Him to decide for God for me.

I sometimes struggle with the idea of letting go and letting God, not because I still struggle with the idea of a deity, I have come to terms with my higher power. I struggle with letting go, because I am always afraid I will miss the signs, when I get the answer. I have come to understand, it is not so subtle, when the answer comes from spirit, it comes in the form of innate knowledge, a deep knowing of the answer, despite how crazy it may appear. When I get answers from spirit, I suddenly, just know the answer to the question I have asked, and I need only trust this guidance and follow its lead.

Are you a control freak too? Do you find it easy to let go and let God?
